Why are ferrets banned in some areas?

Most domesticated ferrets are thought to have originated from the polecats of Western and Eastern Europe. Therefore, it is not native to many other countries. Canada has a native species of black-footed ferret, but these are not domesticated as pets.

Domesticated ferrets were imported into most countries and may therefore be considered pests. Unfortunately, many people have let their ferrets go, and some areas have become overpopulated. For this reason, it was decided that banning ferrets was the best option in some areas.

In other regions and cities, these are considered to be potentially harmful and vicious rare pets. This is a misconception about ferret behavior. Yes, ferrets can bite, but so can cats and dogs. Many people are coming together and working to change these laws. They want to educate people about ferrets.

Are ferrets exotic pets?

Ferrets are easily available animals, Considered an exotic pet. Regardless of whether it was born and raised in captivity, an animal is considered an invasive species if it does not live in the area. However, the term is used loosely, as even some native species are considered exotic species. Ferrets are very popular pets for many people, but many countries, states and localities now believe that ferrets should not be kept as pets.

Pet ferrets can be found all over the world, but it’s important to know if you can legally own one. This is an overview of laws in some countries, but check your local laws before bringing your furry little friend along.

America

In the United States, each state is allowed to have its own laws regarding ferret breeding. Regulations vary considerably from state to state. These range from no regulation to the need for vaccines to outright bans.

Keep in mind that just because some states don’t have regulations for ferrets, they likely have regulations for cats, dogs, and other pets as well.

Finally, New York City has banned ferrets as pets, even though they allow them as pets.

Ferret Laws and Regulations by State

Australia and New Zealand

Ferrets are not native to Australia or New Zealand, so regulations are strict. Locations that allow ferrets have strict permit requirements.

New Zealand is a little different. It is now illegal to sell, buy or breed ferrets there. However, individuals who owned ferrets prior to the enactment of these laws in 2002 were allowed to keep ferrets. In addition, special permissions are granted to selected people. Allows pet ferrets for rabbit hunting.

Finding places where ferrets are allowed in other countries can be difficult. From my current research, I was able to create a list of places where ferrets are allowed.

Your local government, ordinance office, or local SPCA/animal welfare organization is the best place to get more information about ferrets in your area. These places have up-to-date information and should point you in the right direction.

I don’t see how you would justify banning ferrets rather than cats, which do so much damage to wildlife.
