February is birth control and neutering month
according to ASPCAApproximately 6.3 million companion animals are housed in shelters each year in the United States, and this number does not include animals abandoned on the street or passed from house to house. There are too many animals and not enough households to care for them.
The most responsible thing pet owners can do is to neuter their pets. In honor of National Spay and Neuter Month, the Berkeley Veterinary Center team details why.
Reasons why pets should be spayed or neutered
Perhaps the most talked about reason for spaying and neutering pets is to control pet populations. However, the benefits of cat spaying and dog spaying also include health and behavioral/lifestyle benefits.
Health benefits of neutering female pets
When a woman is spayed, the uterus and ovaries are removed, eliminating the possibility of cancer forming in these organs. Additionally, this procedure reduces the risk of:
- breast cancer: Hormones promote the growth of some cancers, including breast cancer, so spaying puppies and kittens before their first heat cycle greatly reduces their risk of developing mammary tumors.
- Pyometra: In addition to cancer in cats and dogs, a deadly uterine infection called pyometra can occur in unspawned pets.
- Feline leukemia and feline AIDS: These cat-specific diseases are spread through infected cat bites. Intact females are more likely to fight over a mate and are therefore at a higher risk of contracting either of these conditions.
Health benefits of neutering male pets
When it comes to male pets, neutering dogs and cats has significant health benefits, including:
- No testicular cancer: ever since The testicles are removed during spaying and neutering, so transmuted males do not develop testicular cancer.
- Reduced risk of prostate problems: Reduced testosterone production as a result of spay/neuter surgery may reduce the risk of prostate disease in male pets.
Behavioral and Lifestyle Benefits of Contraception and Castration
Spayed and neutered animals make better domestic pets for the following reasons:
- Altered pets are less likely to “spray”
- Modified Pets Are Not Aggressive
- Mounting motion is inhibited
- Females in heat that are not spayed are very confused for up to 10 days.
- About 85% of dogs hit by cars are unaltered males
- Contraception and castration prevent unwanted pregnancies
- Save money on treating pets with certain cancers or having to take care of litter
