Rescuers rushed to help the cat and six kittens, but were stunned to discover they all had polydactyly.
Andrea Christian
when Andrea Christianis a volunteer. St. Francis Society Animal Conservation Activities, received a call about a kitten in need of help, and she took immediate action. They came from families who were going through a difficult time and could no longer care for them.
Andrea made room for the new arrivals, and Sam, a fellow rescuer, rushed to the scene to pick them up. “It turned out that the babies were only three weeks old, but mama was very sweet,” Andrea told Love Meow.
My surprise came when I realized that both the kittens and their mother were polydactyly and had extra toes on their paws.
The family decided to surrender the mother cat, six kittens, and one previous kitten. With the help of the St. Francis Society Animal Welfare Group, the remaining cats (4 boys) are being neutered and tested to stop this cycle.
The mother cat was named Pollyanna, and from the beginning she was lovingly protective of her six precious cats. She chose a box stuffed with blankets as her kitten nest so that she could stay safe in a comfortable enclosure.
She spent most of her time with the kittens, nursing them, doting them and keeping them clean.
One day, when Andrea brought a plate of food to the mother at the nest, the kittens decided to give it a bite. They were too young to eat on their own, but tried to imitate their mothers by chomping food on their noses.
“They snort and eat a little, and she eats the rest.”
Pollyanna and her kittens (affectionately named Dolly Parton, Dwayne the Rock, Hairy Styles, Leo Decaturio, Ed/Eddie Sheeran and Charlie Purse) have extra feet It has fingers and looks like it’s wearing mittens.
One kitten has a normal number of toes on both hind feet, but some litters have seven toes on each hind foot.
The kittens are getting bigger by the day, more active and playful, and are constantly watching over their mother. With their newfound energy, they run, pounce, figure out how to climb, and wrestle with all their might.
Rok, the burly kitten, is a mama who clings to Pollyanna and chases her around the room. He has a lot of tricks to get his mother’s attention, and fooling around is one of them.
“Rock is Mommy’s best friend. Pollyanna has the sweetest personality.”
At 5 weeks of age, kittens will soon begin weaning. Pollyanna is very patient and gentle with her demanding six and caters to their every whim.
She doesn’t mind being herded by them all at once and is always as gentle as possible.
Families with polydactyly thrive in foster care. Once the kittens are big enough to be adopted (Tampa, Fla.), they are spayed/neutered and start looking for permanent homes.
Pollyanna gives her babies all the love she can give them.
After raising her last child, Pollyanna enjoys life with a loving and pampering family.
