When a 7-week-old tabby kitten arrived at a county shelter last month, staff noticed it had unusual eyes that required a professional evaluation.
Director Ashley, liberation cat house, received a plea for help from a shelter and took action. “Jerry was a little fussy with me at first, but it’s probably not uncommon for kittens picked off the road,” Ashley told Love Meow.
On his first night in the foster home, Jerry slept soundly in his comfy bed with a full stomach. Once he knew he was safe, he got a little more attention.
With good food and great care, Jerry recovered from the infection. As soon as he felt refreshed from his feet, he began to bounce around the room.
“The ophthalmologist said Jerry’s eyes looked healthy and normal and that he had vision in them. However, his eyeballs were pointing up instead of forward. Jerry had no ‘problem’. No, he just looks a little different,” Ashley told Lovenya.
Jerry loved the company of his pals, but he clearly needed a kitty friend as well. She said, “Kittens want to play, but they get tired of playing alone, so it can be hard to be alone.”
Thankfully we had another kitty itching to see him. When Ashley picked up Jerry from the shelter, she decided to take on another bachelor who also needed a friend. She said, “I asked if she had anything else (like jelly).”
The shelter staff brought her a ginger-and-white kitten named Taro who needed additional treatment. “He was only a week younger than Jerry, but he was quite small for his age.”
Taro was shy at first, but after cuddling on Ashley’s lap, he gradually opened up to her. He let out a stormy purr and started licking Ashley’s hand as if to thank her for accepting him.
This little boy was always looking for friends to play with and nap with.
He also suffered from lone kitten syndrome because he didn’t have a litter to teach him how to interact and play properly.
When Jelly and Taro were ready to meet, they approached each other and began to smell their surroundings. Soon they were playing, wrestling and jumping around the room until they were tired and curled up in bed together.
The two friends immediately accepted each other as if they had been siblings all along.
Taro showed an immediate improvement in food intake when the jelly was nearby. “At first I had to give Taro some with a syringe. He wasn’t a big eater, but now when he sees jelly eating, he eats more too.”
Their personalities also rub against each other. Taro was always a purring little machine, so Jerry beefed up the motor to keep up with his little brother.
“Cats are also more curious than they used to be. Having a feline friend makes them feel more confident and want to explore.”
It hasn’t even been a week yet, and Jerry and Taro share the same bed, waist-hugging, doing everything together. “When we’re not napping, we’ll run together, wrestle, or chase toys together.”
“They are both very sweet, loving and playful boys. It’s incredibly heartwarming to see how happier and happier they have become after making friends.”
