If this is your first trip to the Olympic Peninsula, start by familiarizing yourself with the land. At the heart of the peninsula, Olympic National Park covers nearly one million acres. Towns and travel routes bypass the edges and exist along the rim between the park boundaries and rugged beaches.

The Olympic National Forest forms an approximate semicircle to the east and south of the national park, with another section to the northwest. This is important because pets are welcome in the Olympic National Forest. Of course, they must be under control or on a lead. Mount Olympus soars about 8,000 feet above the center of Olympic National Park. Like the rest of the Olympic Mountains, what makes this region famous is its wild and ever-changing weather.

With glacier-capped mountains, lush temperate rainforests and more than 110 miles of rugged coastline, Olympic National Park is a nature lover’s dream. Located on the western side of Olympic National Park, the Hoh Rainforest is one of the peninsula’s most popular destinations. Once stretching along the Pacific coast from southeastern Alaska to the central coast of California, this site is one of the finest examples of temperate rainforest in the United States.

Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on the Ho Rainforest trails. Given its unique habitat, that’s not unexpected. However, we haven’t seen anything quite like the one posted on the visitor center sign.

“Dogs are the natural enemy of all creatures in the woods. Pets are not allowed on the trails to protect them, yourself and other hikers.”

It seems a little harsh.

Fort Warden State Park

Fort Warden was used as a military base until 1953. Now a 433-acre state park, it’s a charming and beautiful Olympic Peninsula attraction to explore with your dog.

Pets on leashes are allowed almost everywhere in Fort Warden State Park, including over 11 miles of hiking trails and beaches. However, it is not possible to enter the active buildings and museums.

Forts Warden, Flagler, and Casey, built between 1898 and 1920, formed a “Fire Triangle” at the entrance to Admiralty Bay, protecting Puget Sound from maritime encroachment.

No hostile fire was ever fired at the fortress, and much of the artillery was removed for use in Europe during World War I. However, bunkers and batteries still remain on top of the strategic hill overlooking Puget Sound. You can explore bunkers and artillery structures with your pet.

Fort Warden also has camping options. Forest Campground is located near the park’s main entrance, and Beach Campground is adjacent to the lighthouse along the beach. With 50 of his RV sites and stunning views of the Sound, this is a spot not to be missed.

Port Townsend

Located at the northeastern tip of the Olympic Peninsula, Port Townsend was founded in 1851 with the goal of becoming the largest port in the Northwest. Business picked up as foreign ships began docking and a Victorian building was built to house them.

Unfortunately, it all came crashing down when the Great Depression hit and the railroad could no longer afford to extend the line beyond Puget Sound. Much of Port Townsend’s population has left and the buildings have been abandoned. Today, it has undergone a careful restoration, giving the town a quaint atmosphere.

Port Townsend, which still has strong maritime ties, is now a hub for independent boat manufacturers. Even if you don’t know anything about boats, it’s fun to walk through the marina and see the ships docked here.

There were also some friendly locals who took pictures with Tai and Buster.

Finding unique pet-friendly restaurants has become a hobby for us, and Port Townsend provided a particularly memorable one. The PT Soda Fountain & Diner is exactly what the Soda Her Fountain looks like. The back deck overlooking the harbor is also dog friendly, so who could ask for more?

Cape Flattery Trail and Lookout

Cape Flattery was on our “must visit” list simply because of its geographic location, the northernmost tip of the continental United States. We didn’t expect this to be one of the most beautiful places we have ever visited.

This 1.9-mile easy trail is pet-friendly and mixes boardwalks and dirt trails. Winding under a canopy of trees, this trail takes you to various lookouts with unique views of Cape Flattery.

Take the ferry to Victoria

From Port Angeles, on the north shore of the Olympic Peninsula, it’s a 90-minute ferry ride to Victoria, British Columbia. Victoria is a gorgeous, walkable city and a fun place to explore with your dog.
