A variety of health problems often plague ferrets, but there is one condition that can develop before a ferret is born and can be challenging in its own right.

Waardenburg Syndrome is a disorder that develops while Kit is still in the womb, but with some special management techniques she can still live a wonderful and happy life.

What is Waardenburg Syndrome?

It was first discovered by a Dutch ophthalmologist in 1916, and after much research over the years, it was finally named and formulated by Petrus Johannes Waardenburg in 1951. He classified this disorder into his four categories. Type 2A is the type that most commonly affects ferrets.

Waardenburg syndrome, also called neural crest disorder, is a genetic disorder that progresses to varying degrees. It is also found in small mammals and occasionally humans.

Neural crest cells in the brain are involved in various developmental processes in the body. Cells migrate from the brain into the body through the neural tube, where they help form bones and cartilage in the face, intestines, and muscles. Neural crest cells are also involved in the development of multiple periglandular tissues, including the eye.

Not all Waardenburg ferrets have all symptoms. It is common to have only a few symptoms, but depending on what your ferret is suffering from, the number of symptoms will equate to the amount of training and care required.

• White fur (blaze or panda fur color)
• eye, fur, and skin pigmentation changes
• baby face look
• gastrointestinal problems
• cognitive impairment
• Behavioral problems/lack of social skills
• abnormal gait
• eyes further apart
• flat head
• strange head movements

Symptom management

Owning a deaf ferret can certainly be difficult, but they don’t seem to mind it because they were born that way and it’s normal for them.

To test for hearing, start with general speech or noise. Turn up the volume of this type of sound and see if your ferret responds. If not, try tapping or stomping on the floor and see if you feel a vibration. Also, if I can’t hear you, I’m easily startled.

The ultimate test is the “vacuum test”. This simply runs the vacuum cleaner and sees if there is any reaction to the noise. Ferrets that are partially deaf may react slightly.

Once you know your hearing status, start training. Some ferrets respond to specific hand signals to aid comprehension. They can observe your body movements and facial expressions to learn what is good or bad. If they are easily startled, try vibrating the floor to let them know you are coming.

You and your ferret will adopt and learn each other’s habits over time.

A major problem with wadi ferrets is their inability to understand the cues given by other ferrets. They’re deaf, so they don’t know if they’re being too rowdy or doing something that other ferrets don’t like.

Observation is your friend. If you see a ferret playing and feel you need to intervene, fix the wardy. Often ferrets start learning how other ferrets like to play, but sometimes she gets a little too excited. You may need to intervene from time to time to direct their energy elsewhere.

Some ferrets with Waardenburg syndrome have sensitive digestive systems. In such cases, consult your veterinarian to suggest a diet that meets your veterinarian’s needs.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for Waardenburg syndrome. It’s a genetic mutation they carry with them for the rest of their lives. It is not contagious and cannot be spread to other ferrets in this manner.

Certain conditions may require treatment just to relieve pain and other health problems that may occur.

Most ferrets with Waardenburg syndrome lead healthy and well-regulated lives. Caring for them comes with some challenges, but they can still form loving bonds with you and other ferret friends.

It may take a little patience, but otherwise it will be just like any other pet ferret. You also give an otherwise overlooked ferret a wonderful home.
