For over ten years, the Cincinnati Zoo has South Rift Landlords Association
(SORALO) Located in the South Rift region of Kenya. In this part of Kenya, wildlife (such as elephants and lions) and humans coexist, sharing the same space and resources. Wildlife can still move freely within the terrain, and doing so strengthens the links between the Mara-Serengeti and Amboseli-Tsavo ecosystems. SORALO is working to ensure that this situation is maintained.
Wildlife rangers, hired from the local Maasai community, are an important part of SORALO’s conservation efforts, helping to protect wildlife from people and people from wildlife. Doing this is no easy task, conducting daily anti-poaching patrols, sharing information on how to avoid conflicts between lions and livestock, elephants and crops, and treating local residents injured by elephants, hyenas, buffalo, etc. We need to be on the front lines to save lives. .
On 16 September 2023, SORALO and 150 other ranger teams across Africa will carry 22kg and run 21km as part of the Wildlife Ranger Challenge to raise awareness and funding for wildlife rangers across Africa. run. The goal is to help thousands of rangers and endangered species such as elephants, pangolins, rhinos and lions.
Wildlife rangers are at the forefront of conservation efforts across Africa, routinely making personal sacrifices and risking their lives to protect the continent’s amazing wildlife and habitats. Rangers include first responders, teachers, community support workers, mediators, and researchers. Funding for the Wildlife Ranger Challenge will help them protect endangered wildlife and some of the continent’s most vulnerable areas, while protecting communities and promoting coexistence with wildlife. It also helps to secure and feed their own families.
